No argument here AB, this is totally for the sake of discussion. I'm pretty sure the "main" function of the spider is to keep the coil centered in the gap. However, that is certainly not the spider's only function. I do agree with you that it is also responsible for returning the moving assembly to the "home" position. Consider also that in some cases the spider is also known as the damper.
It will be interesting to hear the engineer's perspective, and i truly appreciate you asking and sharing.
You are correct as well.It does keep the coil centered but it must be able to bring the cone back rapidly..I too am interested in his thoughts on this.Looking forward to it... I have been wondering about the drawing too. :biggrin2:

Talked to Bill and he said the last 5 digits on the 3182 is 24910 so that is the original cone number... So as Earl noted about the white grease pencil this could have been re-coned with an original Altec cone or it was done at the factory...But being this has a rubber surround it is most likely re-coned at some point with the OEM cone IMHO.
@Bowtie ... He also said that both answers are correct the spider is part of the suspension..Keeps the coil centered, but it makes the cone act as a piston both the rubber surround and the spider work in unison like a spring to control a straight up and down movement of the assembly. :wink2:
